"Volunteer in Kenya"
Volunteer-Report by Julia Werner and Fenja Niemeyer

Before our trip, it was already called that we should write a report - "No problem" we thought, but now the time has come and we don´t know how to start...

After almost 30 hours on the way we arrived on Friday the 13/09/2013 in Mombasa. The Manager Joshua picked us up from the Airport. We had a lot of impressions on the way to Diani. There were many people and a lot of rubbish on the streets. Even there were old and broken huts on the way and the cars were making a lot of noise. The ferry drove to the other side and after that we arrived at the Kid Kindergarten. We met Heinz and Heike on our first weekend and they have shown us Diani.

In Kenya we had the opportunity to be in every class for one week. We really liked the work with the small ones in the KGs, it was so much fun. Everybody welcomed us very nice. In this time the kids had to write the midterm exam and the end of the year exam. There are only these two tests in one term. The kids are very happy about exams. But we have to say it is not like a German standard. Some questions or answers are unclear or not like the things they learned. After exam the teacher make an order from the highest points to the lowest. The most successful three children got a present.

The marching and raising the flag in the morning was very impressive for us. The kids sing the national anthem and the sound is very good. The Children really know what to do.

The weather in Kenya most of the time was very good, we had mostly sun and really high temperatures. There was a lot of rain in one week and we had a power cut for a whole day. But the teachers told us normally there is power cut for a whole week - so we were happy about that one day.

In our time we were invited to an African wedding. Also this has been long prepared, the guests can be tailored clothes, the cars and the church were well decorated. The ceremony was similar as in Germany - that was a great day.

On Friday, 15/11 was the Graduationsday . The children of the KG 2 start school next term. The children were called individually and have obtained their certificate. They got presents and were very proud. The day was very long prepared by the teachers and students. The classes have prepared songs and poems and they recited the guests. The parents, siblings and relatives of the students came on this day to celebrate together. We had the opportunity to make great photos with the kids and their families. So we can remember this day very good.

On the last day we went out with the whole Kindergarten crew for lunch. We got really beautiful presents and were sad to say goodbye. The teachers spent the whole afternoon with us.

And so we went in mid-November with a suitcase full of souvenirs but also full of experiences and impressions back to cold Germany. We are happy and grateful to have had the opportunity to see this project and met so nice people!

Thank you to everyone who was involved!
